The Maybank Malaysian Open has been part of the European Tour since 1999. It is part of the tour's program to expand in Asia. The tournament was first played in 1989 and has been part of the Asian Tour ever since. The prize money offered is less compared to those on the in Europe and as a result the top players do not play here. The total prize purse for 2006 was $1.25 dollars. From 2007, it will be known as the Carlsberg Malaysian Open due to change in sponsors.
Charlie Wi of Korea beat Thongchai Jaidee by one stroke to clinch the 2006 Maybank Malaysian Open . He took home the trophy as well as the winner's cheque of € 1,74,773.
