The BMW Asian Open is part of the European Tour's plan to expand in Asia and particularly in China. It was first held in 2002 at Taiwan. Subsequently it was moved to China. The event is features on the money list of both the European Tour and the Asian Tour.
The 2006 BMW Asian Open was held at the Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club in Shanghai from 20-23 April. Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano won the title via the playoff against Henrik Stenson. He also pocketed the winner's cheque of €2,47,810.
