The Algarve Open de Portugal Caixa Geral de Depositos was previously known as the Portuguese Open . This tournament was started in the 1950's but it became a part of European Tour only from 1972. It is held at the Le Meridien Penina Golf and Resort in Portugal during late March or early April every year. After the European Tour has spent the winter months in Asia , Australasia and South Africa, it returns to Europe for the remainder of the season. The Portuguese Open is among the first of the tournaments to be held there.
Over the years due to the change in sponsors, the Portuguese Open has undergone a series of name changes. They are:
- Portuguese Open 1953-88; 1991-98
- Portuguese Open TPC 1989-90
- Algarve Portuguese Open 1999-2000
- Algarve Open de Portugal 2001-03
- Algarve Open de Portugal Caixa Geral de Depositos 2004
- Estoril Open de Portugal Caixa Geral de Depositos 2005
- Algarve Open de Portugal Caixa Geral de Depositos 2006
The tournament has a smaller purse compared to the other tournaments on the European Tour . In 2006, the total prize money was €1.25 million with the winner getting €2,08,330. Paul Broadhurst clinched the title with a narrow one-stroke victory over Anthony Wall.
