The Open Championship is the oldest of the four major championships on the men's tour. It has been a regular feature in the European Tour since 1972 and part of the US PGA Tour roster from 1995. It was started in 1860 in Scotland, making it the oldest tournament in the world. It is always played on a links course and is hosted by one of the many prestigious clubs of England .
The Championship is always administered by The R&A, regardless of its location. At present there are nine courses on which the Open Championship is held on a rotation basis. There is fixed rule about which course will host the vent and the host is appointed by The R&A five years in advance.

History of the British Open Championship
- The Open Championship was first played on 17 October, 1860 at the par-12 Preswick Golf Club with eight professionals. Willie Park Sr won by two strokes.
In the beginning the winner was presented with the Champion's Belt.
