Senior PGA Championship

The Senior PGA Championship was first held in 1937 at the highly acclaimed Augusta National Golf Club . It is one of the major championships on the senior's tour and is co-sanctioned by both the Champions Tour and European Seniors Tour. The tournament is organized by the Professional Golfers' Association of America. On two occasions, i.e. in 1979 and 1984, the tournament was held twice in the same year. Over the years, the tournament was held on five occasions. There are a host of eligibility criteria for this prestigious meet. They are:

• If you have won any major championship in your career
• If you have won the Senior PGA Championship on a previous occasion
• Any winner of the last five US Senior Open
• The top 50 players on the Champions Tour money list
• If you have represented the USA in the Ryder Cup
• The top 50 players on the Champions Tour career money list
• The top eight and four players of the last year's Order of Merit on the European Seniors Tour and Japanese Seniors Tour respectively
• If you have won a Champions Tour event since the last Senior PGA Championship
• A one-time exemption for those who turned 50 and have won a tour event at least once in the last five years
• A one-time exemption for former PGA Club Professional Champions turning 50

Barring these criteria the authorities can invite any golfer who does not qualify in one of these criteria.

The 2006 Senior PGA Championship was won by Mike Reid, who beat Dana Quigley in a play-off. He won $360,000 for his efforts.

Past Winners

Hale Irwin has lifted the Senior PGA Championship on four different occasions, including a hat trick of wins. Gary Player has won it three times. Here is a list of winners who have won here since it became part of the Champions Tour .
