The Senior British Open Championship is nowadays recognized as the fifth major tournament on the Champions Tour . It is administered by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St Andrews and features on the Official Money List of both the Champions Tour and the European Seniors Tour. It was first played in 1987 but it became part of the Champions Tour in 2003. The tournament has a lower age limit of 50 years and is not played on any particular course.
The 2006 Senior British Open Championship was held at The Westin Turnberry Resort in Ayrshire, Scotland. The match went to a playoff with Loren Roberts getting the better of Eduardo Romero. The tournament offered a total prize money $ 1.7 million with $ 293,981 going to the winner.
