The origin of golf can be traced back to the eleventh century in China. A game similar to golf was played there. However, the modern form of the sport evolved in Scotland during the fifteenth century. Golf was played as a popular pastime in the country. In the nineteenth century, the game turned into an international sport under strong influence of the Victorian Industrial Revolution and British colonialism.
The first ever professional golf championship was organized by the Prestwick Golf Club in 1860. Since that time, golf has been known as a professional sport. The winner of the first golf championship was Willie Park. Gradually more and more golf tournaments were introduced to the world of golf. In a short period of time, golf became a high profile sport with various business houses offering sponsorship for the golf tournaments.
Currently there are numerous tournaments for professionals, amateurs, juniors and women. Some tournaments are also held for charity. Throughout the year, these tournaments are held at various countries all over the world.
