Profile: Colin Montgomerie is a legend in his own right. He has been dominating the European Tour for the last 15 years. In this period, he has won the European Order of Merit eight times which is a record. His exploits have earned him the prestigious title of OBE, given by the Queen of England.
Montgomerie won his first tournament at the age of 20. He won the Scottish Youths Championship, an amateur tournament, in 1983 and followed it up with two more victories at amateur meets.
Monty became a professional in 1988 and in that very year he won the Rookie of the Year title on the European Tour. He won his first title on the tour the following year at the Portuguese Open – TPC. Since then his career went upwards as he kept on improving his game. In 1991, he got selected for the Ryder Cup for the first time.
Monty's golden run at the tour began in 1993. He won seven straight Order of Merit titles till 1999 which is a record for any tour. In this period he won 20 titles on this tour. So far, 1999 has been the best year for him. He had won five tour titles in that season. The only thing that is missing in his cupboard is a masters victory. He had finished second on five occasions but could not break the jinx.
He was awarded the OBE in 2004. Monty took part in eight Ryder Cups and had won all of them. He also holds the record of not losing a single singles match. Besides the Ryder Cup he has also taken part in the Alfred Dunhill Cup, the World Cup, the UBS Cup and many other team tournaments. Monty currently occupies the 17 th spot in the Official World Golf Rankings.
