Winged Foot (West)
The West Course of the Winged Foot Golf Club, situated in Mamaroneck, New York , is a very difficult course making the golfers struggle.
History of the course
The Winged Foot (West) was designed by AW Tillinghast and was opened in 1921.
The course is laid over an ordinary piece of land but Tillinghast has converted it into a master-piece. The golfer has to stay focused throughout the course as he needs to hit long, precise shots all the time on this 6956 yard course. The greens are small while the bunkers are very deep.
There are records which tell us that around 8,000 trees were cut while making the course. Besides this, a huge amount of rocks were removed while making the freeways and greens. Three different types of grass were planted on the course.
The course has a small problem, i.e., there are too many trees. The authorities have already started felling them in order to make the course less difficult. At present there are more than a 1000 trees on the course.
Course Trivia
- There are two short holes – the 6 th and 11 th hole; which acts as a breather in this long and grueling course.
- The Winged Foot Golf Club also has another course called the East Course. In 2005, it held the 34 th spot in Golf Digest's list of Top 100 golf Courses in the US.
Though the Winged Foot (West) course is tough on the golfers, it still holds the eighth spot in the list of Top 100 Golf Courses in the US . As we continue on this tour we will learn about the other top-100 golf courses in the world.
