The Golf Club
The Golf Club , located in Columbus, Ohio, is a fine course but has never been in the limelight.
History of the course
The Golf Club was opened in 1967 and according to some critics it had the best design among the courses of that time. The course was built only for the entertainment of its members and their guest. As a result, the course will never be able to host a major tournament.
The course was built by Pete Dye, who experimented by using different varieties of grass against the accepted norm of that time. He used bent grass for the fairways and fescue for the roughs. His experimentation proved successful as the owner of The Golf Club , Fred Jones, found the course as he wanted, i.e., “'to feel as if it's been here forever as soon as its finished”.
Course Trivia
- Though The Golf Club was Dye's one of the earliest course, his sense of angle is pretty much prevalent here, especially in the second, 12 th , 13 th and 15 th holes.
- While teeing, some of the bunkers are hidden from view making it more challenging for the golfers.
The Golf Club is a private club and do not host any major tournaments. However, it still ranks 51 st in Golf Digest magazine's list of top 100 golf courses in the US. As we continue on this tour we will learn about the other top-100 golf courses in the world.
