Southern Hills
The Southern Hills Country Club is a private golf club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
History of the course
The Southern Hills Country Club was formed in 1936 upon land donated by Waite Phillips, a multi-millionaire. Perry Maxwell designed the course which was renovated by Keith Foster in 1999. The club has three nine hole courses, namely the Front Nine Course , West Nine Course and the Back Nine Course . The Front and Back Nine Courses were built in 1936 while the West one was built in 1992 by Ben Crenshaw. A round of golf is played by making a combination of 18 holes from amongst two of the three courses. The first two courses have tree-lined fairways while the other one is wide open. While the terrain is rolling, water hazards come into play on a substantial number of holes.
The course became a standard for building courses in the Oklahoma area. Other courses, which came up, followed the Southern Hills design and as a result the course was copied many times.
