Shinnecock Hills
Shinnecock Hills Golf Club is located in Southampton on Long Island, New York. The club, along with five other clubs, founded the United States Golfers Association in 1894.
History of the course
The Shinnecock Hills Golf Club was founded in 1891 by William Dunn Jr with the help of members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation tribe. The original 12-hole course of Shinnecock Hills was designed in 1891 by Willie Davis. Dunn remodeled and expanded the original course to an 18-hole layout in 1895. Since then the course was redesigned twice over the years.
- Charles B Macdonald and Seth Raynor retained only five holes of Dunn's original design while redesigning the course in 1916.
- In 1931, Howard C Toomey and William S Flynn did another makeover of the course while retaining five of Macdonald and Raynor's designed holes.
The course features 6,996 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 70. This narrow, links-style design was built on rolling terrain and will assess all aspects of your game. There is one water hazard that rarely comes into play, but sand bunkers seem to be placed in all the right spots throughout the course. There are various shaped greens full of subtle breaks and severe undulations. All the fairways are defined by multiple cuts of rough, and if you find yourself in the long native grasses, you'll probably not make par on the hole. Course Trivia
