Sand Hills
The 18-hole par-71 Sand Hills Golf Course is a relatively new course and is situated in Mullen, Nebraska in the US .
History of the course
The Sand Hills Golf Course came into existence in June, 1995. The course shares a close resemblance with the famous St Andrew's (Old Course) and was designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore. It is a links-styles hilly private course and is full of natural and man-made bunkers but does not have any water hazards, trees or out-of-bounds stakes in play. It is the most natural golf course built in the US since the First World War.
Course Trivia
- The Sand Hills Golf Course has enormous 50-90 yard wide fairways in keeping with the vast expanse of the course.
- These fairways, seeded with a blend of four fine-blade fescues, make a stunning contrast against the bunkers and the native tan and brown grasses blowing in the breeze.
- The cost per green on the course was only $300, which is cheap compared to other courses, as the sand particles here are of excellent quality.
- Hole No.18 is the signature hole of the course. It is a 467-yard, par four, requiring a tee shot up a slight dogleg left fairway featuring a sand bunker extending all the way up the left side until you reach the elevated green.
- You can enjoy a round of golf here only if you are a member or you are accompanied by a member.
The Sand Hills Golf Course was adjudged the Best New Private Golf Course in the US by Golf Digest magazine in 1995. It holds the 12 th spot in the magazine's list of Top 100 Golf Courses in the US in 2005. As we continue on this tour we will learn about the other top-100 golf courses in the world.
