Oak Hill (East)
The 18-hole East Course at Oak Hill Country Club is located at Rochester, New York.It is considered as one of the toughest golf courses in the US PGA Tour roster.
History of the course
The Oak Hill Country Club was formed in 1901 at Pittsford and only had nine holes. By 1911, the course was extended to 18 holes and a new club house was also built. The scenario changed in 1921 when the University of Rochester decided to build a campus in that area. They offered the club a 355-acre plot in exchange for this land in a nearby location. The club accepted the offer and moved on to its present location. As the land available was more than triple the original one the club members decided to build two courses.
World famous golf course designer Donald Ross was commissioned to design the courses and it was opened for play in 1926. When Ross first visited the land it was almost barren with hardly any trees around. It was a farmland and was used for farming for more than 100 years leaving the soil soft. Dr John R Williams concluded that Ross had done a brilliant job while designing the course and suggested that the plantation of thousands of trees would augment the course's beauty. As a result thousands of sapling were planted which consisted of maples, evergreens, elms and mostly oaks.
The East Course is the more difficult of the two and is very demanding on the golfers. As the greens are undulating and medium sized, sometimes it becomes difficult in reading the course. The course also has its share of water hazards which come into play on five occasions. The second course is called the West Course.
Course Trivia
The East Course at Oak Hills has been the venue of many tournaments like the Us Senior Open, US Amateur etc.
It has also hosted the US Open (thrice) and the PGA Championship, two of the four masters.
Among the list of great golfers who have won here are Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead, Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan and many others.
The course has drawn praise from top golfers like Tiger Woods who has said that it is the hardest and fairest golf course that he has played upon.
The Oak Hills (East) is one of the toughest golf courses on the tour but still holds the 27 th spot in Golf Digest magazine's list of top 100 golf courses in the US. As we continue on this tour we will learn about the other top-100 golf courses in the world.
