Muirfield
Situated in Gullane, Eat Lothian in Scotland, Muirfield is home to the oldest golf club in the world, The Honourable Company of Golfers.
History of the course
The Honourable Company of Golfers goes back to 1744 in history when they laid down the thirteen “Rules of Golf”. Muirfield became their permanent home in 1891 before which the club played on two different courses.
The Muirfield course is a links course but has a unique characteristic which sets it out from the rest. Most links courses run along the coast and then back again leading to two sets of nine holes each of which face roughly in the same direction but Muirfield is arranged as two loops of nine holes, one clockwise and another anti-clockwise. This means that, assuming the wind direction remains the same throughout a round, every hole on the course has a different wind direction from the tee. The credit for this phenomenon goes to Old Tom Morris, who designed the course. The dangers on the course can be viewed openly with no hidden bunkers, subtle bumps or hollows to be found.
