Set on the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, the Maidstone Club is considered as one of the oldest clubs in the US. The club was opened way back in 1891. It was then a nine-hole course which was extended into an 18-hole course in the 1922.Willie Park Jr did the job of redesigning the course and is considered a masterpiece.
The soil available here is one of the best in the world. It is very firm and fast while the greens are small and difficult to hit at one go. Moreover, the greens are even quicker that the fairways.
Park routed the course craftily and introduced different types of hazards at various angles like Hook Pond, sand dunes, beach grass, a marsh, beach grass and reeds. On top of that is the ever-present wind which continually influences the style of play. The fairways are lined with trees and the water hazards come into play on four holes.
