Garden City GC
The Garden City GC is an 18-hole course and is located in Garden City, New York. It still is a male-only club which has attracted a lot of criticism.
History of the course
The Garden City GC was opened in 1897 and has been designed by Devereux Emmet. In 1916, the course underwent some modifications under Walter Travis. Robert Trent Jones also made some modifications in 1958. No more than a couple of holes are in the same direction. Sandy soil is the basis of the course which makes it firm. Thought the course is a good 10 miles from the coast, the wind is a vital factor here.
Emmet introduced cross bunkers to present a direct challenge to the golfer. Travis added some 50 more bunkers to the course while deepening others. In addition there are many grass and pot bunkers throughout the course. He also rebuilt all the 18 holes, increasing the length of the course in the process. Water hazards come into play on two holes. The course is basically a links-styled course but not a links course.
Course Trivia
- The Garden City GC has hosted the US Open, one of the four majors, on many occasions.
