History of the course
Founded in 1922, the Cherry Hills Country Club was designed by William Flynn. A group of wealthy businessmen founded the club and paid a whopping sum of $4,500 to Flynn for his job. He designed the course in the traditional way with trees lining up the fairways. The greens lightning fast but small in area. Locals consider the 18 th hole as the toughest as it is a par-five 491-yard hole. It is also considered as the signature hole of the course. The course underwent a $12 million image makeover in 2005.
The club also has a nine-hole par-three course called the Rip Arnold Course.
Course Trivia
- The Cherry Hills Country Club has hosted the US Open, one of the four majors, thrice (1938, 1960 and 1978).
- It has also hosted seven USGA Championships.
- You have to shell out $95,000 if you want to be a member here.
- The club features a commemorative plaque in honor of Arnold Palmer, who drove a 404-yard first hole on his way to victory at the 1960 US Open.
