Casa de Campo (Teeth of the Dog)
The Casa de Campo (Teeth of the Dog) is an 18-hole golf course set on the ocean in La Romana on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic.
History of the course
Pete B Rye designed and built the Casa de Campo (Teeth of the Dog) golf course, which was opened to the public in 1971. The ocean plays a vital part as you tee off on this beautiful course. The course was originally 6941 yards long and meandered its way through citrus and coconut palm trees and along the rugged shoreline.
There are seven holes which are set on the shoreline and any mishit would land the ball into the ocean. As with all courses set near the ocean the wind is an important factor as you will have to keep it in mind while making your shot. If the winds are up you are going to face a torrid time but this experience will be worth the pains.
The course was built entirely by hand as around 300 workers cleared the underbrush with machetes and used pick-axes, sledgehammers and chisels to cut the rocks. As the original soil was not of good quality the entire top soil was made up by mixing different components.
