The San Roque Club Old course Spain
History of the Course:
The San Roque Golf Club-Old course is located amidst the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja Mountains, in the picturesque town of San Roque, in Cadiz, Andalucia, on the southern coast of Spain.
The San Roque Golf Club was established in 1990, and now consists of 36-holes of fabulous golf with its two 18-holes courses- the Old Course and the recent 2003 opened, New Course. Both San Roque courses are subtly crafted amidst the undulating wooded parkland landscape, bounded by stands of oak and cork, while the foothills ending at the Mediterranean coast.
The San Roque Golf Club-Old course was designed in 1990, being constructed by architects, Dave Thomas and Tony Jacklin. The bunkers however were later redesigned by architect Seve Ballesteros.
The 6,494 metres, par 72, Championship Old course of the San Roque Golf Club consists of an 18-hole layout winding through the mature forests and emerging out onto some hilly holes. The well-conditioned course consists of contoured and fast greens; tree-lined, narrow sloping fairways; numerous tricky bunkers and sand-traps; native vegetation, as well as undulating sloping terrain, with ravines and water hazards on the back nines, all combining to make this a demanding course and a challenging test of one’s golfing skills and for all standards of golfers.
The fabulous settings and natural surroundings of the San Roque Golf Club allows for a unique golf layout, requiring accuracy, as well as the tranquility derived amidst the natural beauty is charming.
The Clubhouse of the San Roque Golf Club offers excellent services including serving of Spanish and International cuisine- the famous “Bolero” Restaurant and bar and the authentic Japanese restaurant “the Kamakura”. This white sands Andalucian retreat also offers fabulous views of the course and scenic surrounds, whilst enjoying the cool Mediterranean breeze.
Course Trivia:
- The other 18-hole championship course at the San Roque Golf Club-its New course, was designed by famous American architect Perry Dye, and opened in the Autumn of 2003.
- The San Roque Golf Club has hosted numerous golf events including in-house events like Mens rollup stableford, Ladies rollup stableford and white tees medal and the venue for the European PGA Qualifying School Tour.
- The San Roque Golf Club provides golf practice facilities including driving and putting ranges, Pro-shop, and a Golf Academy.
- Besides golf, the other sporting activities at the San Roque Club, includes its famed Equestrian centre.
- Amongst the fabulous holes at the San Roque Golf Club, are its narrow fairway 5th; the long par4 6th with a lake and uphill green ; and some very demanding closing holes bounded by water hazards like its par5- 17th hole, and its signature par 4-18th hole that leads to washout of good scores.
