Victoria
The
Victoria Golf Club in Cheltenham is located is Melbourne's famous "rolling sandbelt" country.
History of the Course:
The
Victoria Golf Club was the brainchild of the late Billy Meader in 1903, being established at the Fisherman's Bend location.
The Victoria Golf Course was designed by Oscar Damman and William Meader in 1927, while finishing touches were added to it by renowned golf architect, Dr. Alister MacKenzie.
Recently, a few minor changes were made to certain holes on the course for making the 2002 Australian Open a more challenging experience.
The par 72 Victoria Golf Course is well crafted amidst Melbourne's Sandbelt region with the dunes forming a beautiful landscape. The course layout consists of well-positioned holes that are spread across the natural rolling terrain.
The perfect fairways, brilliantly contoured greens, along with the modified bunkers and gaping sand traps created by MacKenzie, provide a formidable challenge to all standards of golfers besides offering them a unique golfing experience.
Some of golf's greatest that have played at the Victoria Golf Club include Peter Thompson, Douglas Bachli, and Harry Williams.
Course Trivia:
The Victoria Golf Club was inaugurated by Prime Minister Mr. Stanley Bruce, (who later became Lord Bruce Viscount of Melbourne), on May 14, 1927, after taking the first tee off at the course.
The subtle use of the land slopes and natural vegetation incorporated into the course design of the Victoria Golf Club by its designers can compare it to a smaller version of the Royal Melbourne!
The Victoria Golf Club has been host to the 2002 Australian Open Tournament along with other major golfing events over the years.
The Victoria course contains a great many holes including the rare tour a golfer gets from holes 9 through 13, wonderfully designed with long and short pars across the natural undulation of the beautiful sandbelt course.
