The National Golf Club-Old Course
The National Golf Club-Old Course is a beautiful course located on the stunning coastal stretch of dune land on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula's at Cape Schanck.
History of the Course:
Opened in 1987, the original National Golf course-Old Course was designed by leading golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. in 1988.
Built on a hillside 80 metres above sea level, The National Golf course-Old Course is a generally hilly and naturally sloping course. The layout of the 6313 metre, par 72 National-Old Course consists of an amazingly crafted course through the rugged coastal region, surrounded by tee-trees and offers stunning coastal views on sixteen of the holes. The course contains rough fairways surrounded by scrubs, tiered greens and sharp bunkering, makes this a punishing course, yet a challenging one.
The new centralized Clubhouse of the National Golf Club was created when the club expanded to 54 holes and is located where the three courses of the National Club meet; providing spectacular views of its Old Course, Moonah Course and Ocean Course with the Bass Strait forming a picturesque backdrop, a heavenly sight.
Course Trivia:
The National Golf Club-Old Course is part of the 54 hole, tri-course series at The National Golf Club, which provide three distinct golfing challenges (Old Course, Old Course and Ocean Course). These three courses have been designed by 3 of the world's famous golf architects - Robert Trent Jones Jr., Greg Norman and Peter Thomson, respectively.
The National Golf Club-Old Course has its unique 135 metres, par 3, 7th hole with amazing views as well as difficulty to handle. Its tee spot contains a panoramic view of the Bass Strait, the Peninsula and even Melbourne's Port Philip Bay. An accurate tee off, played with anything from a wedge to a two iron, over a wild jagged ravine that lands gently on a superbly built green almost 80 metres wide, where anything short, long or wide here is penalized!
Although located closely to one another, each of the three National Golf Club courses offer the golfer a range of distinctly memorable golfing experiences.
The National Golf Club-Old Course is a private golf course. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
As per The Australian Top 100 Golf Courses (2006 rankings), The National Golf Club -Old Course has been ranked as No. 14.
