Concord Golf Club
The Concord in New South Wales is another esteemed Golf club of Sydney and also considered to be amongst its finest.
History of the Course:
Founded in 1899, The Concord Golf Club has a long history behind its formation.
Used by the Sydney club for its tournaments until 1899, the Concord's members decided to form the club and to develop the links on the Eadith Walker estate. Since then, the Club has been expanding its course and acquiring new land. Designed by famed architect Dan Soutar in 1916, the Concord club was just starting its career when due to World War II, things came to a standstill. The course was used by the army's anti-aircraft unit to protect the Mortlake Gas Works and also as a machinery shed.
However, things brightened up for the prospects of the course in its coming years. The construction of three dams near the course now provides a steady water supply for its greens and fairways. With this came the redesigning and modification of the entire course. Undertaken by golf architect, Ross Watson in 1996, the Concord course saw new changes being incorporated into it.
The par 71, 18 hole Concord Golf Course layout now comprises of undulating fairways lined with trees, smooth and quick greens and well positioned bunkers. The dam at the 15th tee was also reshaped so as to enhance the beauty of the golf course and play. This reconstruction has led to improved playing conditions as well as a better course, and provides an overall exciting golfing experience.
The Clubhouse of the Concord Golf Club was refurbished in 2001, and the new look clubhouse with its wooden decor still offers a warm atmosphere of the traditional club through its memorabilia.
