Individual Irons
The individual irons in an iron set can be divided into three groups—“long irons”, “mid irons” and “short irons”. The individual irons numbered from 1 to 4 are considered as the “long irons”. No.5, 6 and 7 irons are the “mid irons” and no.8 and 9 irons are the “short irons”. The no.9 iron, which is the shortest among the iron set, is known by the name of “pitching wedge”. At present, a regular iron set does not include no.1 and 2 irons. Instead players prefer using the fairway woods for the shots. The long irons with lesser lofts are generally used to take approach or tee shots. On the other hands, mid and short irons are used for taking short shots like chipping, pitching and event putting.
