Golf Club Head
Golf club is one of the necessary equipments needed for playing golf. Club head is the most important part of a golf club. The face of the club head comes in direct contact with the golf ball during play. In some golf clubs, two faces are made in the club head. Both the right-handed and left-handed golfers can use these clubs with two faces.
In the initial days of golf in the fifteenth century, like other parts of a golf club, club-heads were also made from woods. Persimmon and maple woods were used as the material for the club heads. However, some club makers experimented with the club faces by using metal, leather or other materials for covering them. These ancient club heads were much smaller and heavier than their modern counterpart, which caused a little difficulty in making shots.
Since the invention of the metal wood by Taylor Made in the 1970s, use of much broader club heads was initiated. These woods with metal heads were much lighter and easier in playing strokes. Later titanium was introduced as the material for club heads. With this advancement, production of lighter club heads with larger hitting area was possible. In 1995, Callaway brought “Big Bertha”, the largest wood of the period, in market. Since then various companies started making large drivers. The United States Golf Association or the USGA fixed the volume of club heads to a maximum of 460 cubic centimeters. Callaway along with Nike moved one step forward in the development of golf clubs. In 2006, these companies presented square drivers, which are supposed to be the best of the kind so far.
| The process of making the club heads has also been revolutionized. Initially, all the metal club heads were forged, by hammering and pressing the heated steel. At present investment casting method is used for making most of the club heads. In this process, the weight of the club is distributed to the surface, which helps in increasing the accuracy of the shots made with it. Taylor Made, Callaway, Nike, Infiniti, Integra, Acer, Ashton, Bang, Bionik, Rawlings, Snake Eyes, Ping and Adams are some of the leading manufacturers of club heads. |
