Gibraltar is an overseas territory of the British. It is located on the south of the Iberian Peninsula, overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. This strait links Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. Official Gibraltar National Anthem is "God Save the Queen". The Gibraltar National Anthem is shared by the other British overseas territories.
Gibraltar however has a separate local anthem of Gibraltar. This local anthem, "Gibraltar, Gibraltar the rock on which I stand" in Gibraltar was adopted only on 18th October in the year1994. The local anthem reflects the nationalism of Gibraltar as does the national flag of Gibraltar. The lyrics of the anthem were written as well as the music of the Anthem composed by Peter Emberley. The local anthem is played on 10th September at the end of the rally for Gibraltar National Day.
The local anthem of Gibraltar could not gain popularity in its own country and has been subjected to various criticisms. People of Gibraltar criticize it for sounding like a pop song. People even say that it dos not have the dignity of a classical song which an anthem ought to possess. Some believe that as the song was composed by a non Gibraltar, it could not capture the right spirit of Gibraltar.
