The present Chief Minister of Gibraltar Peter Caruana belongs to the Gibraltar Social Democrats party. Peter Caruana is the leader of the party. The main ideal of the party is that the party is against the move towards the joint British-Spanish Sovereignty. The party is a conservative party. The party returned 8 out of fifteen members in the election of 2003.
Gibraltar Liberal Party is a member of Liberal International. The main philosophy of the party is that it is committed to self determination regarding the arrangement of the constitution. The party formed a pact with Gibraltar Social Democrats party in the election of 2003 and returned seven members, two of whom are liberals.
Gibraltar Socialist Labor Party forms the present major opposition party. Among the political parties of Gibraltar, Gibraltar Socialist Labor Party is the oldest surviving party that is active till date. The party had its origin in the Trade Union Movement.
Many political parties of Gibraltar have become dysfunctional at present. Some of these are Gibraltar Labor Party, social democratic, Gibraltar Reform Party and Association for the Advancement of Civil Rights.
