Gibraltar is the only overseas territory of British. Gibraltar though overseas territory of the British has internal self government which came into effect with 2006 Constitution.The Government of Gibraltar falls under the category of Parliamentary representative Democratic. The legislature of Gibraltar is Gibraltar Parliament. The Gibraltar Parliament was called the Gibraltar House of Assembly between 1969 and 2006. The replacement of the name Gibraltar House Assembly reflected the increased autonomy of Gibraltar according to the new constitution of Gibraltar.
The parliament of Gibraltar is unicameral. There are 18 seats for which 15 members elected by popular vote , one is appointed for the Speaker, and 2 ex officio members. The unicameral body consists of fifteen members who are elected by bloc voting in Gibraltar. Each voter is allowed to elect eight members. There are no electoral districts as the territory of the Gibraltar is very small.
Each party or coalitions of party nominates eight to ten candidates and seeks votes for all of them. The winning party usually has all its members nominated.
The parliament in Gibraltar is located in a building overlooking the Main Street and John Mackintosh Square. The building was established in 1917 was a Exchange and Commercial Library. The building was opened to serve as Gibraltar Legislature in the 28 August 1969 by the then Governor Admiral Varyl Begg.
