Gibraltar is the overseas territory of the British. But it has an internal self government which came into effect with 2006 Constitution. The government of Gibraltar falls under the category of parliamentary representative democracy. The leader of the largest party in Gibraltar Parliament is appointed as
Gibraltar Chief Minister. The Governor of the Gibraltar formerly appoints the
Gibraltar Chief Minister.
The cabinet of Gibraltar consists of the Chief Minister and council of Ministers. The Chief Minister of Gibraltar is the head of the government or the Executive. Chief Minister is elected for a period of four years. The Chief Minister of Gibraltar usually enjoys the support of the all the elected members of the Assembly. The governor along with the Chief Minister appoints the other ministers among the fifteen elected members of the parliament.
The first chief Minster of Gibraltar was Joshua Hassan who was elected as the Chief Minister for the second term also. His served as a chief Minister from 11 August 1964 to 6 August 1969, and in the second term from 25 June 1972 to 8 December 1987. He was a successful layer and belonged to the party of Association for the Advancement of Civil Rights.

- Adolfo Canepa from 8 December 1987 -25 March 1988
- Joe Bossano from 25 March 1988 -17 May 1996
The present Chief Minister of Gibraltar is Peter Caruana who came into the power in 17 May 1996 and again returned to power in the year 2003.
