Garrison Library, Gibraltar was established in the year 1793 in the European land of Gibraltar. The Garrison Library, Gibraltar was inaugurated by the famous Colonel John Drinkwater Bethune. However, the official opening of the Garrison Library, Gibraltar took place in the year 1804 by the hands of the Duke of Kent.
The Garrison Library, Gibraltar even served as the archive service center of the Gibraltar Chronicle as well as the head-quarters of the same. The Gibraltar Chronicle is in fact the oldest newspaper in the language of English. The Garrison Library in Gibraltar receives its fund from one of the private trusts of the country rather than the government of Gibraltar.
Later in the year 2006, the Gibraltar Chronicle's editorial office moved away towards the Watergate House and the print works got relocated at the New Harbours in the year 2007. The archive is sill at the Garrison Library at Gibraltar.
The Garrison Library of Gibraltar has as many as thirty five thousand books . There are many rare volumes of books available at the Gibraltar Garrison Library. The Gibraltar Garrison Library mostly stresses on the importance of travel on the culture of a particular region. There is also an excellent collection of the local history at the library. The library is also the proud bearer of many famous prints, lithographs and furnishing having a tempting historical background.
