Gibraltar Education follows the pattern of the education system of England. The first and the foremost years of Gibraltar are completed at the nursery or the pre-school. However attendance is not mandatory in these nursery schools. The compulsory Gibraltar Education starts from the age of four years with the commence of the primary schools. The inaugural year of Gibraltar Education is termed as Reception.
The primary Education in Gibraltar stretches up to eight years. After completing the primary education, at the age of twelve, the students of the Gibraltar Education step forward into the secondary education system in Gibraltar. The secondary education are offered at the single sex secondary schools of Gibraltar. A for year course at these schools prepare the students for the General Certificate of Secondary Education or the GCSE. The major subjects that are offered at the General Certificate of Secondary Education or the GCSE include those of English, Science, Mathematics, Religious studies and Spanish.
After the completing the GCSE, the students move forward to the sixth level of Gibraltar Education System. At this level the students are to proceed towards an A level course of the span of two years. After the completion of the first year the students sir for the Advanced Subsidiary or the AS examinations while at the end the entire course they sit for the Advanced 2 or the A2 examinations.
