The Great Siege Tunnels, Gibraltar can be located inside the Rock of Gibraltar. The sole reason behind the formation of these tunnels was to establish a well developed defense system.
The work for the Great Siege Tunnels, Gibraltar started of in 1782. It was thought by Sergeant Major Ince to dig a tunnel for installing cannons. Thus the Great Siege Tunnels in Gibraltar were built having within it, stored crowbars, explosives and sledgehammers. This tunnel was initially 25 meters long.
With the Great Siege, the Great Siege Tunnels at Gibraltar were re-excavated and made more than 50 kilometers long. The height of the tunnel is 2.10 meters and the breadth is 1.83 meters. Throughout the tunnel area there are different figures reminding one of the Great Siege period.
There are a number of Victorian cannons at the entrance gate and within the galleries of the Great Siege Tunnels of Gibraltar. Some of these Victorian guns date back to the year of 1850. The journey of the Great Siege Tunnels, Gibraltar ultimately ends at the observation point. This area overlooks the Mediterranean on the northern part.
This is one of the most important tourist destinations of Gibraltar. It gives a picture of the bygone days.
