Parson's Lodge

Parson's Lodge is also popularly known as mini Gibraltar. It is basically a narrow like limestone dorsal. The Parson's Lodge of Gibraltar has got tunnels within it. It is one of the most important of the series of batteries of Gibraltar. This lodge surrounds the Rosia Bay.

Parson's Lodge in Gibraltar used to have a great strategic importance. The Moors and the Spaniards were quite aware of it. The Moors therefore constructed a wall after 1333 and the Spaniards brought an improvement to it. It was very necessary to protect the anchorage which was situated in the northern side of the Parson's Lodge after the coming of the British in 1704.

As per the records of the 1720 armament list, there were 4 guns in Rosia. The number of guns rose to about 19 in the year of 1744. Besides there were 2 other guns in the Camp Bay to the south. The name of the Parson's Lodge at Gibraltar appeared in the armament list for the first time in 1771.

Parson's Lodge became self-dependent coast artillery searchlight position with the advent of the 20th century. In 1941, the Parson's Lodge was made the storehouse of anti-aircraft guns, anti-tank guns and anti-aircraft searchlights by the second Btn. Somerset Light Infantry. However the British abandoned it in 1956. From then onwards this lodge is used for training purpose.
