Germany Zip Code


A postal code is known as Zip code in Germany. It is a series of digits affixed to an address (postal) for sorting mails. Germany is probably the 1 st country which introduced a system of postal code. In 1951 Germany introduced postal code. Postal services have special rules for postal codes. In most of the European countries postal code starts with the name of the city. Germany uses numeric postal codes. It consists of 5 digits. During the period between 1990 to 1993 West Germany's 4 digit codes were pre-attached with the letter W and in the eastern part of Germany the old 4 digit codes were prefixed with the letter O. Area codes in Germany consist of 2-5 digits. Usually shorter area codes are used for larger cities, and long area codes are used for smaller towns. On the other hand the Private telephone numbers are assigned inversely long. The larger cities have seven or eight digits, while those small cities may have three to four digits. To call a number within the area of Germany dial the number only and to make a call outside Germany one has to use the respective area code. In a phone directory the Germany phone code could be found.
