Basketball in Germany widely played both by men and women. Germany made her debut in European Basketball Championship at the
Eurobasket, 1951 which was held in Paris. The Basketball team in Germany played at any International competition as the representatives of West Germany.
East Germany
, then, did not show much love for the sport. Although West Germany failed to attain much success in the International Championships, it definitely paved the way for the development of a strong integrated Basketball team in Germany. It was only with the re-unification of Germany that the team became a National one that played for the Republic of Germany.
Of the most prestigious victories that Germany had, till 2005, the most important is the victory at the European Championship played in 1993 at Germany itself where the Basketball team of Germany won Gold for their country. Another significant victory was in 2002 when they won the Bronze Medal at the World Championship. Finally in 2005 a victory at the European Championship again, fetched them Silver. Presently, Germany has a FIBA ranking of 9. Basketball in Germany is also played by the women of the country and they also have a National team. FIBA organizes a FIBA World Cup for the Women's Basketball team quadrennially in the same year as the men's World Cup.
Basketball in Germany is known to have many players whose families are immigrant . Many players in the team have roots in Africa, America, Eastern Europe or other place but have grown up in Germany are by law natives of German land.
