In Germany, there are sixteen federal states. Germany is divided into 16 federal states that are commonly known as Bundeslander. The federal states are further divided into 439 districts. Three cities, Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen are called city-states. Remaining 13 states are referred to as Flachenlander (area states).

These Lands are represented at the federal level in the Bundesrat ("Federal Council"). Berlin and Hamburg have been divided into boroughs. Other Landers have been divided into subdivisions such as Landschaftsverbände, Regierungsbezirke, Kreise, Ämter and Gemeinden. The federal state of Germany which covers the maximum area is Bavaria. Bremen, Hamburg and Berlin cover less area as compared to other federal states.
