In Germany, there are sixteen federal states. Germany is divided into 16 federal states that are commonly known as Bundeslander. The federal states are further divided into 439 districts.
Three cities, Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen are called city-states. Remaining 13 states are referred to as Flachenlander (area states).
