Baumholder Germany, is a typical army town containing little else but barracks and support systems required for maintaining it properly.
Location: The co-ordinates of this town are 49 degrees37 minutes north and 7degrees20minutes east, in the district of Birkenfeld, in the Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It lies to the south of Hunsruck.
Reaching there: Baumholder can be reached by by car after reaching the airport of Frankfurt-Hahn, which is pretty popular among the low cost airlines.
Sightseeing locations: Baumholder being an army cantonment does not hold any sightseeing opportunities. However the nearby towns of Idar-Oberstein and Hunsruck provide a few possibilities. Since the sixth decade of the last century(1960's) tourism in Idar-Oberstein has grown surounding the Steinkaulenberg, which is a gemstone mine open to the tourists and the Deutsches Edelsteinmuseum, a gemstone museum as well as a few recreational resorts.The Hunsruck is a low mountain chain bounded by three river valleys providing a lot of chances to enjoy the beauty of Nature. The three rivers are the Mossell, the Nahe, and the great Rhine, the life vein of Central Europe.
Accommodation: Baumholder does not have any hotel accomodations or sevice apartments, however, the near by towns provide for the lack of such places of temporary residence.
Other Features: Baumholder has the largest single concentration of American combat soldiers anywhere outside America. The main installation is known as the Smith Barracks with support operations in Strassburg in Idar-Oberstein and Neubruck in Birkenfeld. It also has the largest firing squad in Western Germany.
