Frankfurt is the financial center of Europe and is one of the leading locations for European companies. As the leading financial marketplace in Continental Europe, Frankfurt is the seat of the European Central Bank. Thus it is at the center of European monetary policy and the European Monetary Union. The 16 of the world’s 20 largest banks operate their German branch office in the city. Majority of the leading European banks have established their German headquarters in Frankfurt. Banks and financial institutions account for 20% of the city’s GDP.

Frankfurt’s tradition as a trade fair city itself reflects its economic strength. Being a venue of more than 50 annually conducted trade fairs including the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Frankfurt Motor Show have made the city rich. Tourism is another industry that contributes much to strengthen its financial position. Biotechnology, Communications Industry, Manufacturing and Skilled Trade, Real Estate, Telecom and Information Technology, Trade/Wholesale/Retail are the other sectors that help in enhancing the economy of the city.

Wholesale and foreign trade plays a crucial role in increasing its financial strength. With a number of industries such as chemical industry, electronics, metal processing, food processing, precision mechanics, optics ,automobile manufacturing, textile, leather and print and publishing industry, Frankfurt the industrial city receives good revenue.
