Location & Orientation: Lying on both sides of the Main River, Frankfurt is located at 50°7' Latitude North and 8°41' Longitude East. Frankfurt City Forest (Frankfurter Stadtwald) covers its southern part and Hauptbahnhof its western portion within walking distance from the old city center. The airport situated at the southwest of the city center can be covered in 11 minutes by train. All the main sights lie within the city wall and most of the central city can be covered on foot. On the way to city center is located the large square An der Hauptwache. The center of Frankfurt constitutes the area between the former prison and the Romerberg in the small vestige of the old city. The several bridges across the Main River that flows south of the Altstadt connect the city with several important areas like Sachsenhausen etc. Its northern corner is beautifully lined with pretty old houses and narrow alleyways.
Area: Frankfurt spread across a total area of 248.31 sq km with an elevation of 112 m. Its forest area covers 15.4 % of the total area. Its highest point above sea level is 212m and lowest point is 88m. The city’s built-up land and adjacent non-built-up land covers 31.8% and 17.7 % of land is used for traffic purposes.
Weather & Climate: Frankfurt has a warm and wet summer with a highest temperature of 33.6 ° Celsius. The weather in May, September and October is tolerable than the summer that last from June to August. The winters in Frankfurt are quite chilly with temperatures dipping to –7.6 °Celsius in December. Storms are likely during the winter season that last from November to February. The city is also blessed with frequent rains. It receives an annual rainfall of 640mm. The average annual temperature of the city is 10.7 °C and precipitation 555.5 mm.
Population: The city is home to 654, 964 people with a density of 2,638 per sq km. Of this, 51.1 % constitutes the female population, 15.5 % are those below18 years and 16,7 % are people of 65 years and above. 25.4 % of the city’s population includes nationals of other countries.
Languages: Though German is the official language of Frankfurt, English is also widely spoken in the city as 25% of the city’s population include foreign nationals. Several other languages such as Spanish and Italian are also spoken in the city.
