Discover Frankfurt am Main

Frankfurt am Main, also sometimes referred to by various other names such as Bankfurt, Mainhattan, The Big Appel, was known as a trade fair center since 1240. Its location on the famous Main River, gave the city the name ‘Frankfurt am Main’. By 20th century, it developed into a major financial and geographical center of western Germany. Being a cultural and economic center located at the heart of Europe, Frankfurt am Main is regarded as the fifth largest city of Germany. Considered as the largest city in the state of Hesse, it is the seat of one of the largest financial centers in ContinentalEurope. Home to several industries such as chemicals, electronics, metal processing, food processing, precision mechanics, car manufacturing, textile, leather and print and publishing, it is also known as an industrial city. This cosmopolitan city is the twin city of Leipzig since 1990. Serving as host to the well-known major international trade fairs like the International Motor Show (IAA) and the International Book Fair, it has become one of the most important cities in Germany and Central Europe.

Frankfurt, the main transport hub of Germany with extensive air, road and rail connections, has the largest airport in the country. This draws in plenty of tourists from far and wide and also those who come to participate in the different international trade fairs conducted annually. The myriad of cultural and historical sights make the city an attractive tourist destination as well.
