Car Specifications - Transmission System

Transmission system in formula one racing cars is very important. This system has developed with time and constant research is being done to improve the quality of transmission system. A good quality transmission system
will enhance and improve the performance of formula one cars.

Most of modern formula one cars have seven-speed semi-automatic gear boxes. There are strict regulations that permit use of minimum four and maximum seven forward gears. Having a reverse gear in formula one car is mandatory. Maximum of two driven wheels are permissible in the cars.

Systems in the car should be made such that the clutch of the car can be disengaged for a minimum time of fifteen minutes. Even in these conditions, the car should be functional with failed hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems.

Torque transfer systems are prohibited in formula one cars. Diverting torque to a fast rotating wheel is not permissible as torque cannot be transferred between the principal axes of rotation of the front two wheels.

Safety in formula one cars can be ensured from outside the car also. A system is installed in the car for disengaging the clutch of the car from outside the cockpit. This system is accessible to the marshals so that they can rescue the car in time. The system is placed just ahead of the cockpit. For more clear visibility, "N" is marked on the body of the car in red and is circled by white paint.
