About Formula One

Formula One, or F1 as it is better known, became an official motor sport in 1946 with the standardization of rules by its governing body – Federation Internationale de Automobile.

Prior to 1946, it was merely a racing series. The first-ever official Formula One championship began in 1950, which was won by Giuseppe Farina in his Alfa Romeo. Even after sixty-one years, the FIA has maintained the highest standards of motor sporting, making F1 lives up to its name. Formula One derives its name from the "formula" or the set a rules to be followed by all the participants. After the fatal accident of three-times world champion Artyon Sena in 1994, these rules have seen significant changes, which not only depend on the latest technology available but also the drivers’ safety. The tracks are designed by the F1 engineers to test various technical aspects, such as the aerodynamics and fuel efficiency of the cars. The latest addition in 2011 formula one calendar is the Budh International Circuit in New Delhi.
