Saint Vincent and Grenadines Flag
The ensign of
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines consists of three perpendicular stripes of yellow, blue, and green.
Introduction
The yellow stripe of the flag creates a Canadian picket, which is one-half of the breadth of the ensign.
There are three diamonds in the middle of the yellow stripe that are set in a V shape, which represents Vincent. These precious stones commemorate St. Vincent as the "gems of the Antilles". The breadth of the blue stripe is equal to the green stripe.
The yellow stripe is double the width of the two other stripes. The blue color symbolizes the sparkling waters and the tropical sky, yellow signifies the yellow sands of Grenadine, and green symbolizes the verdant foliage of the archipelago.
History
The Saint Vincent and the Grenadines flag was authorized on October 21, 1985 once it achieved freedom from Britain in 1979. The diamonds substituted the old motif of the flag once it was accepted. The earlier ensigns used a naturalistic olive branch adorned with the emblem of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The new ensign was formally flown on October 22, 1985.
On certain occasions, the flag is known as "The Gems". Julien van der Wal, an artist/designer of Switzerland made the layout of the contemporary ensign of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines when an appropriate layout was not distinguished in a regional flag contest.
