Mali Flag Description

The flag of Mali is a tricolor flag of the pan-African colors, green, gold, and red. These colors are seen in vertical stripes across the flag, from green on the hoist side, gold in the middle, and red on the fly. The green traditionally represents the fertile lands of Mali, gold symbolizes purity and the rich land’s minerals, and the red is for the battles fought for independence.

Mali Flag History

A previous version of the flag of Mali, featuring a human figure in black in the center of the gold stripe, was adopted on April 4, 1959 when Mali became the Mali Federation. The stick figure, called a kanaga, had raised arms. The current flag of Mali without the kanaga was adopted on March 1, 1961.
