The flag is set against an azure background with a Greek cross . The blue has varied from dark to light throughout the centuries but ultimately the dark blue shade was opted for as late as 1960's.
The present design of the flag owes its origin to the official flag adopted by the First National Assembly at Epidaurus in the January of 1822. The colors blue and white is also said to represent the waters and skies of Greece which adds to its natural beauty.
