The flag of Gibraltar features two horizontal bands of red and white with a three-towered castle in the middle of the white band. The castle is two-tiered and each of the towers has a door and a window. A golden key is found hanging from the middle tower extending into the red stripe.
The red band in the flag symbolizes the revolutionary spirit and fortitude shown by the countrymen in their fight for independence; white is a traditional color of peace and stands for the harmony in the nation.

The gold key hanging from the middle tower represents the strategic position Gibraltar occupies at the gateway to the Mediterranean. The castle represents the fortress of Gibraltar.

The flag of Gibraltar is an elongated version of the coat of arms of Gibraltar which was first adopted as the official ensign of the country by the orders of Queen Isabella of Castile on July 10, 1502.

The current version of the flag of Gibraltar was formally adopted on November 8, 1982.
