Finland Sauna is one of the most important aspects of Finland. The Finns are also called sauna-enthusiasts and Finland Sauna is blessed with 1.7 million saunas for its 5.1 million population. Finland Sauna is still considered as one of the age old Finnish features. Sauna bathing practices were in vogue in the late 19th centuries in the Old World by people in the Baltic Sea regions and the Ural Mountain hills.
Finland Sauna is quite popular among the Karelians, the Estonians, the Livonians and the Veps. This is also practiced among the Turkic Tatars, the Baltic, including the Latvians and Lithuanians, the Slavic and the eastern Finno-Ugric people. The different types of Sauna in Finland include the smoke sauna, the sauna with chimney and the urban saunas.
Traditionally, the sauna is a building made up of wood where benches are arranged for the bathers to sit in between a pile of heated rocks, splashing water on the hot stove's stones. The bathers also whip themselves with leafy birch whisks. This continuous process of beating and perspiring is referred to as “loyly” in Finnish. Loyly is also considered as the spirit of the sauna.
The main purpose of the Finnish Sauna is that it cleanses the body and therefore an essential part of maintaining body hygiene; it heals sore limbs and muscles as well as refreshes the body; and the most indispensable part is that it soothes the mind of the tension and troubles.
