Lake District Finland, nicknamed the Land of a Thousand Lakes, is famous for its lakes of various sizes and shapes and constitutes about 60 thousand lakes interlinked with a network of channels and bays spreading for hundreds of kilometers across Finland. The name Lake District has been given to the region surrounding Jyvaskyla because of the innumerable lakes and forests that bound it. Expansion of
tourism in Finland owes mostly to these lakes that attract tourists from all over the world.
Lake Paijanne is one of the most renowned lakes of
Finland Lake District. Saimaa, with its extensive maze of lakes is ideal for spending one's holidays. Canoing, fishing and hiking are the favorite pass times of the visitors. The short or the long cruises through the lake ways are a source of pure pleasure. The other interesting tourist-sites in Saimaa Lake District, besides the lakes themselves, are:

The national parks situated alongside the lakes have arrangements made for boaters where they may moor for free and also camp for the night. In the summer seasons, Jyvaskyla, Lappeenranta and Savonlinna organize boat trips in
Lake District Finland from their respective lake ports.
