Sweden Finland is an amalgamation of the names of two countries. In Swedish language, Sweden refers to the kingdom of Suiones. This was a small tribe that made the Malaren Valley their home during the early middle ages. The name Finland in Swedish language referred to a small portion on the eastern side of the Baltic Sea. This area was an integral part of the Swedish Kingdom. This area has no similarities with modern and present day Finland.
Both these countries were parts of the Swedish Kingdom before 1809 and Finnish was the most commonly and widely spoken language by the people. But the scenario changed drastically after 1809. Sweden and Finland got separated by a special treaty in 1809. The eastern part of the kingdom, which was the Grand Duchy of Finland, became an integral part of the Russian Empire. This part became an independent nation, namely Finland in the year 1917.
