University of Helsinki is one of the leading European universities at the present time. Established in 1640, the four major campuses or of the University of Helsinki are the City Centre campus, the Kumpula campus, the Meilahti campus and the Vikki campus. The University of Helsinki has Kari Raivio as the chancellor, Ilkka Niinluoto as the rector and Hannele Niemi, Mauno Kosonen, Marja Makarow and Thomas Wilhelmsson as the other rectors.
The Helsinki University offers a variety of courses through its state-of-the-art faculties. The faculty of Agriculture and Forestry contains the Department of Agrotechnology, Department of Food Technology, Department of Animal Science, Department of Economics and Management, Department of Applied Chemistry and Microbiology, Department of Forest Resource Management, Vikki Tropical Resources Institute or VITRI, Department of Forest Economics and Suitia Research Farm.
The Department of Classical Philology, Christina Institute for Women's Studies, Department of History, Institute for Art Research, Aesthetics, Musicology, Film and Television Studies, Institute for Cultural Research are some of the departments in the arts faculty. Faculty of Bioscience has the Department of Ecological and Environmental Sciences. Other than these it has Faculty of Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, Social Sciences and Theology.
The university offers multilingual courses in English, Finnish and Swedish. The University of Helsinki is also an active member of the League of European Research Universities.
